A fatal accident early this morning 6/8/2020 which claimed two lives and seriously injured another victim all on a motorcycle at Idiroko Road, Sango-Ota.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) has begun a campaign – war aimed at discouraging the attitude of driving against the traffic, such as One-Way driving on all roads in the State.
The TRACE Corps Commander ‘Seni Ogunyemi, who disclosed this in an interview with a group of journalists in Ota said the state government could no longer condone this attitude of ‘One-Way’ Driving which he said is killing as fast as COVID-19 pandemic.
“No responsible government can condone this. The law is there already and the required punishment is awaiting any motorist or rider of any bike who drives against the traffic. One-Way.
“Such erring offenders will be apprehended and sent to TRACE headquarters in Abeokuta, the state capital, for onward transmission of the case to the appropriate law court for Justice.
“Henceforth, cases of driving against the traffic will always be subjected to prosecution”, Ogunyemi said.
The Corps Commander said the state traffic outfit is taking this stance in view of the recurring incidence of fatal accidents occasioned via driving against the traffic.
“We’ve lost no fewer than 10 lives to One-Way driving within one week. Eye witness account told us that it was one commercial motorcyclist, Okada rider, with two passengers that rode against traffic and was run over by a granite loaded tipper at Indomie area of Idiroko Road, Ota.
“The Okada rider, together with one of his passengers died on the spot while the second passenger narrowly escaped death but was seriously wounded.
” You can see this is an avoidable accident which would not have been if the rider had been patient enough to ride through the normal route”.
Asked if he did not think the bad condition of the road that prompted the Okada rider to think of driving against the traffic, Ogunyemi disagreed, saying no condition of the road should have enough potency of making someone to think of committing suicide.
“Don’t you know that whoever drives against the traffic is either mentally unbalanced or he is a hired assassin?
This accident occurred when a blue color Honda motorcycle with Reg. No. LAR935WT rode against the traffic and was run over by an oncoming white/blue IVECO Tipper with Reg. No XA977JBD.
The tipper driver who escaped the scene immediately, later park and reported himself at Onipanu Police station along Idiroko Road.
The TRACE Ota Divisional Head of Operations I, Commander Adetunji Michael Oyebola said that a combined team of TRACE, FRSC, and police arrived at the scene of the accident and took charge of the situation.
According to the TRACE officer, the injured victim had been taken to the general hospital where he is responding to treatment while the corpses of the dead had been deposited to Ifo mortuary.
